The island is flat, which changes daily life. Bikes matter. The beaches on the bay side face San Francisco, and the estuary side faces Jack London and the Port of Oakland. Ferries leave for the city. The tubes and bridges back to Oakland are the everyday constraint — beautiful, and a bottleneck when something stalls.
Housing runs from ornate Victorians in the Gold Coast to former naval housing and newer waterfront buildings at Alameda Point. Families use it for the sidewalks and the shore. Food people use Park and Webster. It is not the place for a late-night scene, and it does not pretend to be.

Getting around
No BART on the island. Ferries and buses connect to Oakland and San Francisco. The estuary bridges and tubes are the drive back to the mainland and the Bay Bridge.
