Berkeley & the north hills · Alameda County

Berkeley

Berkeley stacks a world-famous university against a walkable flatlands and a steep residential hill. The Gourmet Ghetto, Fourth Street, and Tilden Park are all inside the same city limits.

The university sets the calendar. Game days, lectures, and protests change the noise on Telegraph and around campus, then the rest of the city goes back to farmers’ markets and school drop-off. North Shattuck still carries the Chez Panisse legacy. Fourth Street is the designed shopping street. The Elmwood and Solano edges feel like neighborhoods first.

The hills are a different climate and a different commute. Fog settles lower. Streets are narrow. Tilden Regional Park is the backyard: steam train, lake, and trails that start above the houses. BART serves the flatlands at Downtown Berkeley, North Berkeley, and Ashby. A San Francisco day is a train, not a project.

Getting around

Three BART stations in the flatlands. The hills rely more on cars and steep walks. AC Transit fills the gaps. San Francisco is a direct BART ride.
